Moving Forward

 Aloha is...moving forward despite setbacks.

Injuries are humbling.
Illness is humbling.
Starting over is humbling.

Now, that I finished my first "no-sugar" challenge, I took a few days to reflect on it before starting another, longer one. I thought about what triggered my poor eating choices last month, what motivated me to do a challenge and what it would take to get healthy again after a year plagued with non-stop injuries and illness.

Stress is a doozy.
Whether it stems from your personal or professional life, stress is definitely a trigger to making poor choices.

Pain is a doozy. 
Being in physical pain can definitely trigger poor choices because you're looking for another outlet to distract from the pain and "medicate" your feelings about being in pain.

Negative emotion is a doozy.  Negative emotions can be triggers to any unhealthy behavior.  Feelings of sadness, grief, loneliness, boredom, anger, panic, anxiety, frustration, annoyance, fear, disappointment, guilt and even embarrassment are all negative emotions that can trigger emotional eating.

And, here I am, feeling guilty of all of them.

An important step to getting the life you want and improving yourself is the practice of moving forward despite any setbacks you may experience. Part of moving forward requires the practice of letting go of the past and all that comes with it - limiting beliefs, negative thoughts and painful memories. 

I say "practice" because I know it's not so easy to "just do it." If it were, everyone would easily be moving forward with their lives, smashing goals and getting what they wanted. And, that's just not realistic.  So, let's say, "loosen your grip" at least?  

There are lots of things that hold us back - fear, doubt, uncertainty, low self-esteem, lack of confidence - and they usually stem from negative experiences from the past that have conditioned our negative emotions or thought patterns.


Awareness is key.  I hope you have the awareness to recognize if you have negative thought patterns or emotions.  I hope you're willing to take a step back if necessary to examine them in order to move forward.  Just don't stay there.  Don't dwell on the past.  Put your past experiences into perspective.  Find the lessons in your experiences and put them to use. Perhaps these lessons will help you loosen your grip on the past long enough so that you can move forward.

In the meantime, be mindful of the present and all the opportunities that come with a new day, new week and new year.   In the end, time moves on and so should you.

Movement is movement.  Movement is medicine.
