10 Ways to Show Affection

19 Feb

It's Day 6 of Random Acts of Kindness Week. For today's challenge:

Show three people affection.

"We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection." - Dalai Lama

Affection is a feeling of liking or caring about someone. It does not have to be physical. Therefore, you can show someone affection without even touching them. But, you can still touch their hearts with these simple tips.

10 Ways to Show Affection:

1. Give someone a smile, hug, or kiss.

Using physical touch is one of the most common ways to show affection. Being physically close or intimate with someone in a gentle, positive manner shows love, kindness, and caring. It also shows trust.

2. Tell someone you love, like, or care about them.

Everyone likes to hear a kind word or two and the most powerful words to share are: I love you or I like you. Telling someone you care about them or saying, I love you, is special because it's usually not something we would say to just anyone at any time. While verbal, it is still an intimate way to show someone affection.

3. Give someone a compliment, encouragement, or support.

When you care about someone, it's important to support and encourage them to reach their goals in life. Saying anything positive to support someone in their pursuit of health, happiness, or success motivates them to keep dreaming, believing, and achieving.

4. Make time for someone in your life and spend quality time with them.

Time is a hot commodity. It's something we cannot get back once it's lost.  Life is busier than ever in our fast-paced society. There's just not enough time in the day to get everything we want done. Therefore, to share your time with someone is a big sign of affection. It shows they are worthy and deserving of your precious time. It also shows they're important and that they matter to you! Making time for someone shows that their happiness is a priority to you!

5. Put your phone down and give someone your full attention.

Spending quality time with someone means uninterrupted interaction with them. When you care about someone, they deserve your attention without the distractions of everyday life. When you don't give eye contact or don't engage in meaningful conversations, your connection suffers. So, put down all technology devices and focus your attention on them and what's important to them. Even just a few minutes of your time mean the world to them.

6. Make eye contact when someone is talking to you.

Looking away while someone is talking to you is rude. It says that what they're saying is not important to you, which makes them feel like they are not important to you. It also shows you lack focus or don't value their time. Making eye contact improves communication, strengthens connections, and cultivates healthier relationships. If you want to gain their trust, look them in the eye!

7. Be upfront, honest and trustworthy.

Honesty is the best policy, some would say. Being honest with someone shows you value them and their time. As a result, honesty builds trusts in relationships - both personal and professional. It is the foundation from which you can build future success. When you are direct and honest, you're showing respect.

8. Stand up for someone or offer advice when they have a problem.

Standing up for someone is another way to show someone affection. Backing up someone's beliefs, values, or efforts shows that you believe in them and support them in their pursuit of happiness or success. Offering advice to help them in their journey also shows that they matter and that they are important. When you stand up for someone or offer helpful advice, you help to provide the encouragement they need to keep going!

9. Give a thoughtful gift or share your things with someone.

To share or give something unconditionally is a beautiful expression of affection. It is a nice touch of kindness when you spend your money or share your material things with someone. It shows that you value them. It also shows that they are remembered and loved and that you care about their happiness.

10. Cook someone a meal or take them out for a meal.

They say to get to someone's heart, you have to go through their stomach. Everyone needs to eat. In many cultures, eating is a sacred form of bonding. It's a traditional experience that brings people together in both good times and bad. Therefore, for some, cooking for someone is like giving your heart on a plate to someone. It's showing that you care about their health as much as their happiness and that you want to share yours with them.
