Life is like an ocean surface wave.
Ocean surface waves are surface waves that occur in the upper layer of the ocean, usually caused by wind. Ranging in size from small ripples to life-threatening tsunamis, ocean surface waves can travel thousands of miles before striking land.
Like an ocean surface wave, life can bring us circumstances that feel out of our control. These circumstances can present challenges. Some may be manageable, while others may not. Sometimes they are few and far between. Other times they seem to roll in endlessly - one after another with little to no time in between them.
They can also bring changes. Some are simple inconveniences that require making small adjustments in your life. Others are life-changing tsunamis that turn your life upside down.
When the waves of life roll in and you fear drowning, dive deep and start kicking. Go within and listen to your own voice to harness self-control. In other words, when you feel overwhelmed by life events or circumstances, find control in your attitudes and actions. That is where your true power lies.
The first step to regaining control is gaining calmness. Start by taking deep breaths. Harness your breath to harness self-control. Focusing on your breath anchors you to the present. When you are in the moment, you are not held back from your past, where you fear repeating mistakes. Going backwards can intensify feelings of depression. When you are fully present, you are not too far ahead into the future, where uncertainty lies. Getting too far ahead of yourself can intensify feelings of anxiety, fear, and worry.
Being in the present promotes feelings of calmness and control. You can think more clearly and react more reasonably when you feel calmer. Breathwork helps calm the mind and relax the body. Therefore, controlling your breath can help you control your attitude and actions.
Take slow, long inhales through your nose. Hold your breath for a few seconds. Then, exhale slowly but forcefully out of your mouth. Repeat this process until you feel calmer.
Life is based on perception. Your perception of your reality determines how you feel about it. Therefore, you get to decide how you feel about the circumstances and situations you encounter in life. While others may weigh in with their opinions and reactions, your feelings are your choice.
Feeling calm gives you an opportunity to perceive challenges with love, kindness, and compassion. Being loving, kind, and compassionate creates more loving, kind, and compassionate actions and reactions.
Self-love and self-compassion also helps you embrace change with gratitude. Unfortunately, we don’t always know how good we have it until it’s gone. Whether it’s our health, relationships, or jobs, it’s easy to take things in our lives for granted. Use this opportunity as a commitment to finding more reasons to be grateful instead. In other words, difficult situations can make us appreciate easier times more. Therefore, make the best of even the worst situations by adopting an attitude of gratitude.
Your perception of your reality also determines how you respond and react to life changes and challenges. You can’t control how other people respond. And no one can control how you respond or react either. You are in charge of your own actions and reactions.
You don’t have to mirror other people’s responses. You can choose differently. Instead, look for something positive in even the worst situations. Choose to respond with more loving, kind, compassionate actions. Here’s how:
Look for the lessons. What can you learn from this situation? What new skills or knowledge could you acquire as a result of this circumstance? What good can you gain from being forced out of your comfort zone? There is always knowledge to gain from every hardship or struggle. Knowledge is power.
Look for the wisdom. How can this situation help you grow? Will it encourage you to be a better person or inspire you to help someone else? Wisdom is an added benefit from every experience. Its value is in sharing it.
Look for the gifts. As a result of overcoming change and challenges, you will gain courage and confidence, cultivate resilience and perseverance, and strengthen your sense of self. In other words, learning how to ride your waves of change boosts self-esteem and self-worth.
When you have learned how to master your waves, you will be back on top in no time. When you are confident in your attitudes and actions, everything is under control.
