Do you feel blessed? What makes you feel blessed? How often do you count your blessings?

To feel blessed means to feel lucky. Those who feel blessed feel lucky to have something or many things in their lives. They might feel blessed to have their health, home, and family. They might be blessed with fame and fortune. They might feel blessed to live in peace, love, and harmony. Or, they might be blessed with knowledge, talent, or skills.

But when life is hard, it can be hard to feel blessed. When you’ve suffered a loss, it can be hard to feel blessed. And when you’re sad and lonely, it can be hard to feel blessed.

It's hard to count your blessings when you’re too busy counting your curses. But try harder. Finding reasons to feel blessed can change your outlook and your outcomes in life. Here are three ways how:

1. Finding your blessings cultivates gratitude. When it looks like others are farther ahead in life than you, you can feel behind. When it looks like others have more than you, you can feel like you have nothing. And when others lead fuller lives than you, you can feel empty. To help turn these feelings around, focus on gratitude.

Create a list of your best traits. Identify what you like most about yourself and why. Remember the compliments you receive. Seeing the best in you can help bring gratitude out of you.

Create a list of things that you have. Placing your attention more on what you have than what you lack cultivates an abundance mindset. With an abundance mindset, you tend to believe you have more than you need even while striving for more. An abundance mindset promotes feelings of gratitude.

Create a list of things that are going well for you. Expressing gratitude for what’s going right encourages you to keep going. Focusing on what’s going wrong can keep you stuck or hold you back from reaching your full potential.

To feel blessed means to feel grateful. Feeling grateful encourages you to see the positive every day as well as embrace the possibilities of tomorrow. When you express gratitude for the good you have now, you invite more goodness to come your way. Repeat this exercise until you feel abundance more than scarcity in your life.

2. Finding your blessings cultivates a stronger sense of self. When you’ve suffered losses, lost your footing, or lost your way, your self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence can suffer. To help turn this around, create a list of achievements. Go back in your life - as far back as you want - and identify the times you’ve accomplished a goal, achieved a dream, or overcome a fear, doubt, or challenge.

When you use specific details to describe your achievement, you will feel more connected to it. For example, you’re not just blessed for having a college degree; you’re blessed to be the first child to go to college in your family. You’re not just blessed to get a promotion; you’re blessed to be recognized for your hard work, performance, and tenacity. You’re not just blessed to recover from an illness; you’re blessed to regain your health so that you can attend your daughter’s wedding.

To feel blessed means to feel successful. Repeat this exercise until you see more wins than losses in your life.

3. Finding your blessings cultivates joy. When nothing seems to be going your way, it can be hard to feel joy. You can feel overwhelmed, worried, and anxious instead.

To help turn these feelings around, create a list of people, places, and things that bring you joy. Your passions in life are the source of your happiness. It’s important to indulge your passions often. They will help keep your spirits lifted and keep you going when the going gets tough.

What makes you laugh? How do you have fun? Who makes you happy or feel good? Where do you like to go when you seek adventure?

To feel blessed means to be happy. Repeat this exercise until you are content with where your life is right now, even if things are not where you want them to be. Counting your blessings will move you in the right direction.

You are more blessed than you know. Blessings are found in the simplest of things in your life. So, keep looking. The more you look, the more you’ll find.
