Many of us have slipped into bad health habits over the past year. We stayed up later and later to binge on Netflix series. We wore pants or pajama bottoms with drawstrings day after day. We leaned on comfort foods more and more. And, we moved our bodies less and less.
When you add this all up, it's no wonder we put on extra weight. Some of us put on more weight than we ever have in our lives, and it doesn't feel good. We can find ourselves beating ourselves up, asking, how did I let this happen?
Now more than ever, we must practice kindness and compassion for ourselves. Now is not the time be so self-critical. It won't help the weight you gained magically melt off your body. And, it won't help you feel any better about yourself. So, why not be your own best friend? Give yourself credit for wanting to get healthy again and give yourself time to do it.
Getting started is the hardest part. It might be uncomfortable going to bed an hour earlier every week until you're back to your normal bedtime. It might not taste as good swapping out tubs of ice cream for bowls of yogurt and fruit. And, you might miss mindlessly scrolling through social media in favor of long walks outside. But, it will all be worth it to get back to feeling like your old self.
Making an adjustment is hard. It took time to create these bad habits, so it will take time to undo them or to create better health habits. But, it is possible!
And, like any change, it might not feel good at first. Your body might ache or feel sore in places you didn't know existed. You might toss and turn for a while because you're not yet used to going to bed early. And, you might hate eating vegetables just because they don't taste like chocolate or ice cream. But, it will all be worth it once you get your groove back.
Taking charge of your health is empowering. You can feel good about the changes you're making even when it takes time to get the results you want because you feel more in control. While we aren't always in control of what the results might look like, we are in control of our actions. It's only a matter of time for our hard work to pay off. Therefore, anything in life worth having is worth the time and effort it takes to get it.
Take charge of your health and be committed to making positive changes. Your body will thank you!
