No Matter What I've Lost, I Can Find My Smile

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” - William Arthur Ward

The power of a smile is undeniable. It is a welcome sign to the world.  It can transform a stranger into a friend. It can spark a conversation.  It can make someone feel safe. And, It can take your breath away.

I know this because I experienced that with my husband. I had never experienced anything like it before. When I met Matt on our first date, his whole face lit up when he smiled.  I had never noticed that in a man before.  His smile was so bright, it felt like sunshine - California sunshine. It was warm, friendly, and welcoming. To this day, no matter how I'm feeling, his smile lights me up, makes me feel better, and always gets me to smile back.

Even when we’re facing a difficult time, we can underestimate the power of a smile.  Smiling not only projects  genuine feelings of joy and happiness from the inside, but it can also inspire happiness even when we're not feeling happy on the inside. Smiling can be the first step in our journey in love, kindness, compassion, and empathy for others. It is also a powerful tool in self-care.

Smiling might sound too simple, but it can be a game-changer in your life. Utilizing at least ten muscles in your face, smiling can be an effective tool in healing - ourselves and others.  Every time you flash a smile, the brain releases dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin into your bloodstream.  These chemicals boost your mood, improve immune function, and reduce blood pressure, pain, and stress.

But, that’s not all.  Smiling is an act that invites other forms of expression to build connections.  By smiling more often, you are more likely to openly express love, kindness, compassion, and empathy with others.   In fact, according to, studies also show that people who smile appear more likable, courteous, and competent. Therefore, smiling helps to break down walls that divide us and invite communication, which helps to build relationships.

A smile can brighten someone’s day and feel like home. It’s like a bright-colored balloon for your birthday, a giggle of a child, a fresh bouquet of flowers, and a warm plate of chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven.  Everyone deserves a smile. If you can’t find one in others, offer them yours.  You’re bound to get one in return.

Live, Love, and Lead with Aloha.
