Taking Risks Help Me Become a Better Person

05 Jun

“Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision.” ― Winston Churchill.

What do you fear?  What makes you the most afraid or keeps you up at night, lying in bed, staring at the ceiling in a panic or paralysis?  Are you afraid you won't be able to pay your bills?  Are you afraid you will end up alone?  Do you fear for your children's safety?

Fear is that nasty four-letter word we all try to avoid.  Yet, it creeps in and creeps up on us every chance it gets.  Some say that fear doesn't exist.  It's just an illusion or trick of the mind.  In fact, they say F.E.A.R. is an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real.  The actual definition of fear is an emotion caused by anxiety or the uneasiness of being afraid of something or someone.  No matter what you think fear is or isn't, we have all felt it at some point in our lives. We might have felt it especially this year for one reason or another.

Stepping out of your comfort zone and taking risks in life can evoke fear. You would not think there was a risk if there wasn't something you feared. Your fear may depend on the risk you take.  You might fear losing something, being rejected by someone, or failing somehow.  But, without fear, you wouldn't need courage.  Therefore, risks give you the opportunity to be brave.

Mustering the courage to face your fears and work toward overcoming them helps you grow mentally stronger.  The practice of facing your fears and taking risks develops confidence over time.  Every time you make it to the top of your hill, to the other side of your mountain, or over the finish line, you can thank your fear.  You have actual proof that you can overcome life's challenges and your fears.  All you have to do is look in the rear view mirror to see them now behind you.  Even if you didn't like the actual outcome, the fact that you made it to the other side makes you a stronger, better person.  As a result, you will have learned something and grown from the experience. Therefore, taking risks and facing fears is all a part of creating a better version of yourself and a better life.

Taking risks is essential to growth and is the foundation for developing courage and confidence.  Overcoming obstacles and conquering your fears by simply facing them and seeing them through promotes personal growth.  Experiences that challenge you help you grow in maturity, wisdom, experience, and social awareness.

So, the next time you feel the fear, brace yourself for change and growth.  Some risks are worth taking because a stronger version of yourself is always worth making.

Live, Love, and Lead with Aloha.
