A brand new day is a fresh start. Each day offers yet another opportunity to begin, start again or start over with anything in your life. All you have to do is embrace it no matter what the weather brings.
What is it that we like about something that’s brand new? What is the first thing that comes to mind?
Consider a new car. Do you remember the feeling of driving a brand new car off the lot? No dings, dents or scratches yet blemish the shiny, flawless paint job. No crumbs or empty water bottles yet litter the floor. No pens or coins have fallen into the cracks between the seats. And, there’s no coffee stains left like a crime scene anywhere. When a car is in mint condition - like a brand new car - you feel like there’s nothing that can come between you and that new-car smell. Feeling empowered, you drive onto the open road of endless possibilities, vowing to keep that new-car smell for as long as possible.
Now, consider a new outfit. Do you like the feeling of sliding on a new pair of jeans, shoes or a new dress? Maybe you bought a new outfit to commemorate a weight loss goal achieved or the first day of school or a new job. Or maybe you bought it to celebrate a special occasion, like a first date, birthday party or wedding. New clothes or shoes can make you feel like a million bucks. Wearing something new can boost your mood and give you a reason to feel hopeful, happy and alive! Wearing something new can also evoke compliments and create new memories. “Is that a new dress?” elicits an affirming response that’s usually followed up with something like, “I love it! The color really brings out your eyes!” Then, every time you see that outfit hanging in your closet, you can be reminded of a wonderful time and another page in the story of your life.
So, why can't we look at a new day the same way - with hope, excitement and delight? First, people tend to associate certain days of the week with certain functions. For example, people tend to rest, recharge or reconnect on “Sunday Fun Day” by going to church or celebrating family occasions. Others see Mondays as a dreadful day to return to work while others see Mondays as the ideal day to start a diet. Secondly, we tend to fall into the trap of the same old, boring routines. When you're used to doing the same things in the same way for so long, it can be hard to see the newness of another day. Instead, it can look tarnished and rusty when really it is up to us to make it brand new.
There are no hard and fast rules to life, my Pineapple. The reality is that any day of the week is a great day for new beginnings because every day is a new beginning. Therefore, any day is a great day to start something new, start something again, or start something over. Life is full of chances and you deserve to take as many as you can get. Simply make the commitment to take a chance and choose to embrace the opportunity of a new day, like you would a new car or a new pair of jeans.
There are no two days that are exactly the same. Each day can offer new opportunities to live your best life. So, choose to spend your days with people, places and things that benefit your mind, body or spirit with love, kindness and compassion. In other words, practice aloha every day.
How can you make your day more exciting or full of aloha? Start with trying something new or different with your daily routine: Get up and go to bed earlier. Start your day with a daily affirmation, joke, meditation, or upbeat music. Try a new order for doing your tasks. Eat something different or cook something healthy from scratch instead of reheating from a box. Get more exercise or try a new physical activity. Offer your time and talents to volunteering. Reconnect with an old friend or family member you don't speak to often or introduce yourself to someone new. Find a Meetup group or online group of people with shared interests.
Follow your passions. Who are your best friends; what are your favorite foods; what are your favorite things to do in your spare time? Inject your day with as many of your favorite people, places and things as often as possible to give yourself something to look forward to and to make each day brighter.
Consider a new goal or challenge to broaden your mind. What is something you’ve always wanted to do? Is it to learn a new skill, find a new hobby, try a new look or change your career? Every chance you get, read, watch or listen to ways you can achieve your goal by learning everything you can about it. With Google, YouTube and TED Talks, there are endless opportunities for finding fresh ideas and perspectives.
What if you’ve been working toward a goal already, but have made very little progress? You can always start again. First, you can re-evaluate the steps you’ve taken so far and figure out where you went wrong. Secondly, you can research how others achieved that goal. Thirdly, you can enlist some help by getting a coach or getting others who have the same goal to join you for a group challenge. Camaraderie is not only great for keeping each other on task with positive action steps, but it also brings fresh, positive and optimistic energy into your headspace. Therefore, taking steps alongside someone who is on a similar path can keep you motivated to achieve your goal. You can also just start completely over and start from scratch.
Today is a brand new day to bring love, kindness and compassion into your life. Love yourself by embracing that “new-car smell” of today with a smile. Be kind to yourself by looking at today as a fresh start. Then, be compassionate with yourself by forgiving yourself for yesterday’s mistakes or missteps. Finally, slide into today like a new pair of jeans, my Pineapple, stretching it out and making it your own with the adventures you create.
Live, Love and Lead with Aloha.
