When I worked with the elderly in a senior living community, brain games were a staple in my activity programming. Brain games like word search, crossword puzzles, trivia, Scrabble, and Wheel of Fortune were all useful in engaging residents mentally and socially.
I taught my residents that it wasn’t about being right or wrong. The purpose of playing was simply to exercise their brains just like we exercise our muscles in fitness class. By removing the pressure to be accurate or perfect, their self-worth, self-esteem, and confidence soared. They felt included and empowered to do something to help slow down memory loss and boost their own brain power. But, most importantly they had fun!
