I love working with mothers. Mothers are the most nurturing and giving beings on the planet. They are natural-born caregivers. However, they are not natural-born care-receivers.
A mother's instinct to put others before her is both a blessing and a curse. How is it that moms can take care of everyone else but themselves? By that I mean, they unselfishly put themselves so dead last that they end up resentful, bitter, unhappy, unhealthy, and even lost.
Hey, moms! It's natural to put others first, but you matter, too! Self-care is not selfish. Self-care is not a luxury. Self-care is a necessity. Taking care of yourself is taking care of others because everyone around you benefits when you feel good and when you feel good about yourself. When mama's happy, everyone's happy!
Women who fail to recognize their own needs or practice self-care eventually lose their sense of self, or what I call their self-powers. And, that, in turn, creates chaos in a woman's life. From unhealthy relationships, broken marriages, and job dissatisfaction to anxiety, depression, weight gain, and burnout, women feel stuck on a merry-go-round and unhappy.
If you're a mother, don't let this happen to you. Your goals matter. Your dreams matter. You matter! Taking care of others begins with taking care of yourself.
